Review:
It’s a war-torn village Kommaddi, where heads fly faster than the words that its residents mouth. Two warring groups lead by Narapareddy and Basireddy too prefer to speak through their swords than words. Even a game of cards in this backdrop is addressed as ‘five rupee worth faction’. In comes the son of the soil, Veeraraghava Reddy, the only sign of hope to instill some sense amidst this menace. Featuring an actor like Jr NTR known for his action potboilers, Trivikram utilises his presence and a commercial backdrop to drive home an important signal of peace, like the pigeon that accompanies the title card in the opening frame.
Though the plot outline makes this seem like a Mirchi equivalent for Jr NTR – the cocktail of intensity, entertainment, efficient dialogue-baazi, all in measured amounts, keeps the film ticking along neatly. Trivikram masters the judicious balance of pandering to the masses and being a sane voice in the time of need. Aravinda Sametha Veeraraghava is definitely a film that marks a firm departure from the comfort zone of the director and the lead actor. It’s a story that single-mindedly focuses on transformation, and one whose intentions remain consistent. The strong performances do a lot of good in ensuring an impactful film, that precisely paves the way for ‘Rayalaseema’ to turn into a ‘Ratanalaseema’.
Melodrama often clouds the character arcs of women in factionism-driven films, that’s where Aravinda Sametha differs from the pack. The Penimiti song is one example of the emotional turmoil that a woman suffers as her man sets out for a blood bath. And Aravinda, played by Pooja Hegde isn’t Trivikram’s quintessential heroine. Here she is studying anthropology and ethno-driven violence, being the critical link in showing the way forward to a character like Veeraraghava Reddy stuck between revenge and larger purpose. Supriya Pathak, Devayani, Eeswari Rao may have minimal screen time, but there’s enough meat in their characterisation.
This transformational journey gives us a delightful interval action block where Jr NTR offers the goons a taste of death and yet doesn’t tear them apart. While there’s enough action and drama happening in the proceedings to keep you occupied in the first hour, things aren’t quite seamless post the intermission. The one worry throughout Aravinda Sametha remains its predictability. But for a twist or two, you know the trajectory of its lead character. It’s the humour quotient that keeps the film alive then. Naresh and Srinivas Reddy continue from where they left their delightful banter in A..Aa. Sunil delivers lesser laughs than promised, but that doesn’t take away anything from his much needed return to his forte.
All it takes to make a solid commercial film is to redefine it in relevance to the times. It’s not often you’d find a lead character asking people, ‘what’s so heroic about holding a dagger or slapping your thigh’. It’s refreshing to watch NTR remain his controlled self in the film’s entirety. Pooja Hegde gets a credible role as a budding documentary filmmaker, though it’s hard to fathom an actor like Eesha being saddled into a role of nothingness. Trivikram’s fascination for mythology lends well with the theme and the treatment scores over his indulgence this time. And Thaman’s evolution as a composer truly benefits the film. A emotional drama camouflaged in a commercial exterior, here’s a film that’s courageous to stand apart from slapstick madness.

If you watched the trailer and thought it made the movie look trashy, you’re wrong. It’s way worse than the trailer. This movie is garbage and offensive in so many ways. In movie terms, the humor in this movie is BLUE. That means very inappropriate. It’s raunchy and vulgar from the very first sentence in the movie. Why do women have to be portrayed that way to prove they can be powerful in business? Written and directed by men, this cringe-worthy gal-pal comedy showcases female empowerment gone wrong. Women deserve so much better.

January movies are notoriously horrible and Like a Boss is perfect for a January release. You can read the rest of my Movie Review Mom (dot) com.

But then this movie a like the expensive Dil Khush made with the same old cheap cake leftovers. The filmmakers, we’re afraid, sold us a dummy in the garb of a “stylish revenge drama.” Besides Venky’s hooded long coats, Taapsee Pannu’s micro minis (skirts and wraparounds) there is hardly anything that qualifies to be called stylish, unless of course you want to add wide-angled montages of some picturesque sights of Malaysia, which has become the official head quarters of Tollywood’s underworld dons. His close aides start falling prey to an unidentified long haired killer, who drives a fancy bike and calls himself Shadow.
The most entertaining part of the movie is the comedy track involving MS Narayana who plays Psycho Srinivas, a “post mortem specialist”. Venkatesh, tries hard to breathe life into a character that seems like a throwback to his Satruvu days. At over 50, perhaps he’s gotten a little old to get away with this kind of juvenile stuff now.
Taapsee’s performance is the most eye-popping of them all, quite literally at that. Let’s just say we get to see a lot (more than usual) of her in the movie and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say, the curly haired actress gave the hooters and whistlers plenty to cheer about. There support cast of Srikanth, Nasser, Suman, Kavitha and Madhurima do what is required of them. Aditya Pancholi and gang have little to do in terms of acting. They just seem to come and go.
Taapsee Pannu’s slender curvature dominates the songs, which seem like show-reels of het glam quotient, while tunes hardly register. The narrative lacks consistency and the cinematography and editing seem to have a heavy “Billa” hangover.
Note: It’s basically a big dumb revenge drama made with the usual accompaniments, watch it if you are in the mood for some lame fun.

Review:
Quite often, dons are portrayed in a comical way in our films. In several cases, they are reduced to caricaturish roles (when they are not the antagonist). In some cases, they’re given a human touch and made the lead (Munnabhai MBBS comes to mind). Director Sriram Adittya sidesteps the stereotypes and manages to give his character a unique twist in his latest comic caper Devadas. With some cracking humour and well written dialogues, the film is thoroughly entertaining for most part of it. A tighter screenplay, less melodrama and a better climax — and this film could’ve been one for the ages. But for most part of it, Devadas is jolly good fun.
We are introduced to Deva (Akkineni Nagarjuna), a dreaded gangster who’s is baying for blood after his mentor is brutally killed by a rival gang. Being the most wanted criminal, the cops are determined to catch Deva. While on the run from the cops, an injured Deva stumbles into a clinic run by Dr Das (Nani), a sincere doctor who never tires of telling people he’s a gold medallist. In strange circumstances, the two of them become friends. However, Das soon finds out that being friends with a wanted criminal is not as easy as it seems.
The humour is absolutely spot on in Devadas, with Nani getting some hilarious dialogues. There are several moments when he brings the house down with his wisecracks. The writing is creative, and Nagarjuna is not your run-of-the-mill don. He loves to drink, longs for home food and likes spending time with people who don’t fear him. The scenes involving the two stars are a riot, and film mainly revolves around them (rightly so).
But while Devadas starts off well, it’s hampered by an overdose of melodrama as the film progresses, with the sincere doc trying to convince the don to leave the life of crime. There’s a car-chase sequence involving Naveen Chandra, who plays Nag’s rival in the film — a scene which is excruciatingly long and boring. The climax too is weak, and lacks the punch the film needed. The director fails to strike a balance between the light-hearted moments and the melodramatic ones, hampering what is otherwise a hilarious film. Mani Sharma’s music is decent but doesn’t stay with you.
But if there’s one thing that makes watching Devadas worthwhile, it’s Nani. The actor is in top form and delivers one of his funniest performances in recent times. Every time he introduces himself as Dr Das, MBBS, MS, Gold Medallist, you can’t help but laugh — and there’s a lot more from him in this film. Nagarjuna breezes through his role with effortless ease and his scenes with Nani are particularly wonderful to watch. Both Rashmika and Aakanksha deserved better character arcs, even though they play people of prominence. They’re largely sidelined thanks to the Deva and Das show. Vennela Kishore, Rao Ramesh and Murali Sharma have short but effective roles and they’re superb.
Devadas certainly has its moments with some cracking humour and solid performances by its two stars. A tad too long, with some avoidable melodrama and a weak climax prove to be troublesome, but it doesn’t take it away from a hilarious first half which makes it worth your while. If you’re somebody who enjoys Nani’s brand of humour – Devadas is a must-watch.

A protagonist who deals with night blindness – he is clueless about the world after 6pm in the evening, to be precise… A comedy based on this concept provides plenty of opportunities to engage the audience by evoking laughter. Directed by Chachi, Sixer has a few scenes which are worked on the protagonist’s inability. The question is whether those are enough to entertain the viewers for more than two hours.

Aadhi (Vaibhav), who hails from a middle-class family, suffers from nyctalopia, and hence, ensures he reaches back home before 6pm. His life, which includes father, mother and a friend, is all about the remaining 12 hours. One day, Aadhi realises that he can’t return home before the cut-off time and asks his friend to pick him up at a place where a protest, which he is not aware of, is taking place. A politician with a criminal record (RNR Manohar), against whom the protest happens, misconstrues Aadhi to be its leader, and goes after his life. After knowing the issue, an enraged Aadhi goes to pick up a fight with Krithika (Pallak Lalwani), the news reader who covered his ‘participation’ in the protest. His life gets entangled in more problems when he falls for the girl.

Sixer has some of the the necessary ingredients to entertain viewers, but the comedy works only in parts. Vaibhav aptly fits in his role and scores well in the comic sequences. Sathish lends support and makes some of the scenes interesting. Pallak Lalwani’s character is quite predictable; she also doesn’t get the lip sync right in a few scenes. The other characters, save for the one essayed by Radha Ravi, do not leave any impact. A supposedly funny sequence involving Chaams is ridiculous and tests our patience. The antagonist falls flat in the climax because of the clichéd fight with the hero. The movie, on the whole, just falls short of being watchable, despite some of the comedy working out quite well, thanks to the logic loopholes and some silly scenes.

Aadhi is a civil engineer who lives a happy life with his cute family comprises of his parents. Synopsis:
The film starts at an orphanage in London, England. Little Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) is awake at what she calls “the witching hour”, which is when the boogeyman shows up. She looks out a window and sees four men drunkenly fooling around in the streets. Sophie yells at them and threatens to calls the cops on them.

Sophie walks back toward her bed and hears another sound from a different window. She sees cats running through the trash and knocking over a bin. A very large hand picks the bin up. Sophie sees a giant man (Mark Rylance) walking by. She gasps, and he hears her. The giant sticks his hand in the window and picks Sophie out of her bed. He sneaks through the streets undetected and runs all the way back to his home in Giant Country.

The giant (called the Big Friendly Giant of BFG for short) drops Sophie onto a table while he starts to chop up a gross-looking vegetable called a snozzcumber. Sophie thinks the BFG is going to eat her, but he says he doesn’t eat children or people. BFG says he took Sophie to keep her from spreading word of a giant sighting for fear that the humans may hunt him down. BFG also speaks with an unusual vocabulary (his “right and wrong” is “right and left”, for example). After Sophie understands that he is non-threatening, BFG reads her a book and she falls asleep. He then goes to his collection of dreams that he’s captured in jars.

Sophie dreams that she has been taken by an even bigger giant that eats her while BFG stands in the distance, unable to do anything. When she wakes up, BFG explains that he gave her the dream. BFG drinks a fizzy green drink called frobscottle, which has bubbles going down instead of up. It also causes “whizpoppers” (literally explosive farts). Moments later, the same giant from Sophie’s dream, Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement), enters BFG’s home. He and the other far taller giants frequently taunt BFG and call him “runt” since he is significantly smaller compared to the rest. Sophie hides in the snozzcumber, which Fleshlumpeater picks up. He nearly takes a bite until BFG reminds him he hates vegetables. Fleshlumpeater takes the frobscottle and leaves.

BFG takes the goo-covered Sophie to clean herself. He gives her some spares clothes from a pile for her to put on. She puts on a red coat that belonged to another child that BFG had befriended until he was eaten by one of the other giants. BFG then shows Sophie all the types of dreams he has collected.

BFG prepares to take Sophie to the hill where he collects dreams, but he has to pass Fleshlumpeater and his band of giant goons as they sleep. BFG and Sophie sneak away, but BFG is caught by one of the giants. Sophie hides inside a truck. The giants begin tossing BFG around like a football. They stop when it starts raining, as they are terrified of it. Sophie unintentionally leaves a blanket behind, which Fleshlumpeater finds and sniffs, knowing there’s a human around.

BFG and Sophie make it to the hill. They jump into a lake that brings them into the realm of dreams. One particular dream whizzes by BFG, and he cannot catch it. Sophie manages to get it, and BFG says it is her dream.

The two go into London so BFG can demonstrate how he gives people dreams. BFG puts a dream into his trumpet and gives a boy a dream where he receives a phone call from the U.S. president.

When BFG realizes Sophie’s blanket was most likely found by the other giants, he feels it’s no longer safe for her to stay with him since other children that he took care of were eventually taken and eaten by Fleshlumpeater and his friends. BFG returns Sophie to the orphanage. At night, she calls to him. He hears her and decides to bring her back.

The giants all burst into BFG’s home and begin trashing the place, letting his dreams run loose as they break things. BFG has had enough, and he scares them away with fire and water.

Sophie comes up with an idea when she sees a portrait of Queen Elizabeth (Penelope Wilton) in BFG’s home. Together, they concoct a nightmare where the giants are taking and eating children, whereupon the Queen will meet Sophie as she sits on the windowsill. After the dream is made up, the two head to Buckingham Palace and place the dream in the Queen’s head. She has the nightmare and wakes up, alerting her maid Mary (Rebecca Hall) and butler Mr. Tibbs (Rafe Spall). As the Queen describes the dream, Mary sees a newspaper headline mentioning the disappearance of children in London. Sophie then makes her presence known to the three of them at the window. Since the Queen has already seen this in her dream, she allows it and then realizes Sophie is with BFG. Sophie calls for him, but he is afraid to come out. Mr. Tibbs calls the royal guards out as BFG steps out. The Queen orders Tibbs to have them stand down, which they do. Sophie formally introduces everyone to BFG, and she tells the Queen they need her help.

The Queen has her staff prepare a meal for Sophie and BFG. BFG is elated to eat something other than snozzcumbers for once. The Queen brings in her soldiers after Sophie explains that the giants in her dream are real and that they are indeed taking children. The plan is to head into Giant Country and capture the villainous giants. BFG then pours a few glasses of frobscottle for the Queen, Tibbs, some staff members, and even the dogs. Explosive farts follow.

BFG and Sophie wait for the giants to be asleep so they can plant nightmares into their heads. However, BFG left his trumpet behind. Sophie runs into the field with a jar of nightmares and lets them fly into the giants’ mouths. Only Fleshlumpeater isn’t affected. He prepares to attack, but the soldiers arrive in time and capture him and the rest of the giants. They are dropped onto a remote island where they are forced to eat nothing but snozzcumbers for the rest of their days.

In the end, Sophie finds a home in the Queen’s palace under Mary’s care. She narrates on a dream she says she had where she saw BFG’s home, which now has a garden where he grows better vegetables (and still a few snozzcumbers). She opens the window and calls out, “Good morning, BFG!” In his home, he hears her and he smiles.

Vinod Anantoju’s Middle Class Melodies has nothing to do with music; the melodies here refer to the familiar beats in a middle-class Indian life. Be it the cuss words a father spews not out of hate, but love or the way women try to balance the and assert their rights when the time comes – no beat in this beautiful tale seems unfamiliar.
Raghava (Anand Deverakonda) decides to make his delicious Bombay chutney famous in Guntur the day he learns it from his mother Lakshmi (Surabhi Prabhavathi) as a young child in Kolakaluru. His father Kondala Rao (Goparaju Ramana, who’s nothing but excellent) is a loud and foul-mouthed man who runs a tiffin centre, a temper his son also inherits. With his parents’ support, he moves to the ‘big city’ to make all his dreams come true. Sandhya (Varsha Bollamma) has been in love with Raghava for years and struggles to get closer to him. But when being famous for his Bombay chutney is Raghava’s first priority, how he manages to leave his mark forms the tale.
Right from the first frame Vinod makes it clear that there will be no rousing music or heroism shown in this tale. It’s hard not to gag with laughter at the ridiculous sight of an old woman being pulled up on a chair with ropes tied to them or at Raghava’s friend Gopal (Chaitanya Garikipati) who is so obsessed with horoscopes, he’s even willing to let go of Gautami (Divya Sripada), a girl he loves because she was born at a particular time. But at a point in the tale, the familiarity gets too much, making you wonder why some of the tracks, like that of Gopal’s uncle and a chit fund, are explored in detail.
Middle Class Melodies is not without its flaws, it also seems to miss a secret ingredient that would make it great, but it refreshingly offers a peek into everyday lives of characters that are relatable. Because this film is not just about Raghava and his dream, even if that holds the story together. The best part about the film is that, it never overdoes on the emotions, keeping the humour and anger both natural. The bitter-sweet beats of this tale are supported by able performances not just by Anand (whose voice and diction is sometimes reminiscent of his brother Vijay Deverakonda) and Varsha (who’s cute as a peach), but every single one of the cast members (including a hilarious cameo by Tharun Bhascker) and Goparaju Ramana make their mark. Janardhan Pasumarthi’s dialogues apart from Sweekar Agasthi and RH Vikram’s soulful music and Sunny Kurapati’s cinematography also pour soul into the film.
Middle Class Melodies and the tale it tells of an underdog is one as old as time. But it’s also as comforting as some delicious Bombay chutney made with love, which makes it worth watching. Raghava (Anand Deverakonda) is a hot-headed young man who believes his Bombay chutney is out of the world and wants to set up his own tiffin centre in Guntur. Will his dream come true?

But a huge mix-up means he shows up at the wrong office, and to do a job he doesn’t have the heartfor.

‘A Simple Murder’ has a drum-roll-worthy commencement but loses its sheen pretty early on owing to haphazard direction and a feeble script. The promo says it’s a comedy of errors but except for a few condom-packet jokes and that one ‘cheque nahin, Czech Republic’ punchline, the rest of this action-comedy is a continuous effort to connect the dots while trying to stay relevant (and funny) along the way. Of course, the actors ease the pain with their earnest attempts at conjuring up something entertaining with what they had at their disposals, but good acting sans a solid plotline and crisp direction random work. Do they? And to add insult to injury, S. Bharathwaaj’s cinematography tanks – flat-out lazy, underwhelming and there’s no nicer way of saying it.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s this Dilli-ka-macho-launda – spewing gaalis and burning with envy over his wife’s growing proximity with her affluent boss (Ayaz Khan). That charcter hates the world for his own shortcomings, and Zeeshan as Manish is hilariously delusional and a natural at that. ‘English Vinglish’ girl Priya Anand is a greedy, over-ambitious woman stuck with wrong men and the actress has no problem in portraying a morally-bankrupt person and staying in sync with the energy of the male lead. Sushant Singh is highly animated as kill-on-cue Himmat and although his sing-song diction is initially endearing, it gets borderline annoying after the first few episodes. Not his fault though.

Nothing’s simple about ‘A Simple Murder’ and if that was the intent, it has landed miles away from where it was supposed to.

Review:
In the 80s and 90s, there lived a daredevil of an investigative journalist in Canada, Victor Malarek (Josh Hartnett), who feared none and threw around cuss words during live interviews with dignitaries, often dodgy in their demeanour. That’s the picture that was initially painted by writer-director Daniel Roby in this ambitious biographical drama and, truth be told, we were hooked for a brief while. The opening sequence is a clichéd one: of two henchmen chasing the cocky journo in a car to send out a message, he doesn’t budge. In a parallel universe, small-time junkie Daniel Leger (Antoine Olivier Pilon) has been robbed off all his money by the same friend he is now shooting heroine with in a rented boat, Michael, and his ‘crazy’ friend Glen Picker (Jim Gaffigan). Picker offers up his free space to Leger to crash in exchange for odd jobs. Moolah? 80 dollars and tips. Plus the free supply of drugs and to nobody’s surprise, Leger is happy to oblige.
The drug syndicate in Thailand is making inroads into their soil and the pressure to act is overbearing for federal agent Frank Cooper (Stephen McHattie) and his subordinates. Their top informant Picker has a drug lord by the neck and all they need to do is lay a full-proof trap for him to fall into in Thailand. Stage set, points scored. A year later – desperately looking for an explosive story to cover – Malarek revisits the press release of Leger’s arrest and arranges an interview with him. But the Thai police and the Canadian embassy have black-listed Malarek and he is now on round-the-clock watch. ‘Target Number One’ (also released as ‘Most Wanted’ in the US) is torn between two timelines, two scenarios and two lives.
The trailer of this Canadian production was intriguing but the same cannot be said about its full-length version: for one, the story should have revolved around Leger (especially when you are calling it names like ‘Target Number One’ and ‘Most Wanted’, no?) and his miseries in the Thai prison and not on Malarek’s personal issues and professional misfires. Secondly, Antoine Olivier Pilon as Leger is quite the revelation and the two central characters should have gotten more screen time together. In fact, the only times you are invested in the story is when Pilon shows up – once during his interview with Malarek, and the other time when he is begging, pleading with the Thai judges to hear his side of the story in a court of law.
Josh Hartnett puts in solid effort as the self-righteous investigative journalist ‘who is trying to make the world just a bit better’ but he snaps in and out of his character every now and then. Antoine Olivier Pilon’s the best thing to have happened to ‘Target Number One’; he speaks volumes even when he is staring away or talking in hushed tones. Funny man Jim Gaffigan’s not the world’s most convincing informant/rat but there are far bigger problems than him being a miscast.
Cinematographer Ronald Plante deserves accolades for capturing the essence of that era right and all the tension pertaining to the case in question. Jorane’s music essentially puts the p in pity and p in pathos; very impactful in intense scenes.
This crime drama sets out to honour the exposé that Malarek had written back in 1989, which, in turn, led to cracking the alleged cover-up wide open. In fact, in his autobiography ‘Good Luck Frenchy’, Olivier has said that if not for Victor Malarek, he may never have returned to Canada or be able to tell his side of the story. Unfortunately, none of these sentiments shine through in its visual representation. All we get is a stubborn journalist and his relentless pursuit to seek the truth. The journey in between has been dropped, and that in itself is a criminal offence.

User Review:
To be honest I have watched only 2 episodes yet and I have to say it lived upto mine expectations. Special credit needs to be given to Diveyndu for his performance as an UP guy. He doesn’t need extra effort to play a role of an UP guy.

I will honestly rate it 6 but its overrated(perhaps paid). Divyendu Sharma acted well. Poor execution of story line. The theme music is played every now and then; it is so irritating. Direction is poor.

This show is a refreshing change of pace from the average TV drama and is completely addictive. There are so many possibilities the show could go anyway and continue to go anyway it chooses.

The scripting is intelligent and well delivered by competent acting…..The show was five episodes in, so I caught up on the action online. And I must say that the acclaim is well-deserved

I like it, and thanks all the cast for their fantastic performances. I’d love to praise this show more but need to get back to binging it some more!

Character driven drama with enough humour and violence to whet my whistle every week. FINALLY A show that relies of good story telling, fantastic acting, chalk full of character, and realistic plot.

This series gets a 10 from me because it’s the only series that I absolutely will not miss an episode of. These guys know what they are doing, and they got it in spades. I try not to binge watch it, but i keep going, “ok just one more” next thing i know its 4am.

Expected quite spot from it but tbh it wasn’t that much fun from starting. Only munna bhaiya and Tiwary ji played their roles nicely. Plot wasn’t that much great and funny. Though enjoyed it. Ending was okay too.

Main character has followed theme and style from Mirzapur series. No doubt that acting is very good but this is simple story of some twists and turns. Nothing new, but yes not upto rating of 10.

Not as per expectations, just a hyped one, do not waste your time, very much better series are out there.

Really, Acting is brilliant but writing direction screenplay is not a level to match acting level. If you love our new hard working actors go for it but if you want a good story then this should be avoid.

Set in a rural background and revolving around the greediness of a poor family, the film’s story seems like gold on paper. However, as the story progresses on, the writing and screenplay feel outdated with lot of preaching and ranting proving to be a test to your patience. However, as the story progresses on, the writing and screenplay feel outdated with lot of preaching and ranting proving to be a test to your patience. But that is only until the film slowly pulls up its socks.

Mallika (Payal Rajput) is a woman frustrated about everything in her life, both physically and financially. The ‘atidhi’ of the tale Chinni Krishna (Chaitanya Krishna) calls himself a nomad and is introduced to Mallika’s family as a journalist. They reluctantly agree to provide him shelter but the man foolishly flaunts the wealth he brought along. While it all seems naïve, it also promises something more to come your way. Things take a turn when the drunkard father, innocent mother and greedy Mallika decide to take his life. The film drags on from there and ends in a haphazard manner. The emotional ‘twist’ at the end hardly strikes a cord.

After Rx 100 Payal excels at playing a girl with an evil side to her again. She is expressive, but the dialogues are a major let down. Chaitanya’s performance is decent but he still needs improvement on his screen presence. While the rest of the cast also manages to pull off their parts well, it is the bad writing and outdated plot that proves to be a drawback.

Anaganaga O Atihidhi is sadly a thriller with many loopholes in it, but with a better script they could’ve been overlooked. This remake is a case of wasted opportunity with many beats of the original lost in translation.

Review:
When director Buddhadeb Dasgupta is at his best in Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa, his fourth Hindi narrative feature, he captures life’s broken rhythms beautifully and touchingly even as he celebrates the resilience of a little man.

Streaming on Eros Now, the film, which alternates between the brooding and the lively, and the wistful and the sardonic, is shot through with Dasgupta’s distinctive, often deadpan poetic flourishes and enlivened by a scintillatingly pitch-perfect Nawazuddin Siddiqui performance.

The melancholic tone of Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is leavened with nostalgia for the receding light; the pessimistic air is tempered with lingering hope of regeneration; the hard, meditative edge is softened by sustained humanism. The treat is redoubled by the lead actor, perfectly cast as a private investigator who is more lost than the prodigals he is tasked to find.

Dasgupta suspends the titular figure, the man’s tale, and its spatial parameters somewhere between acute realism and genteel, tactile fancy. The eponymous protagonist is a faltering, unassuming detective unlike any we have encountered in Hindi cinema before. His job is to find answers. He poses questions instead.

Mohammad Anwar isn’t the cocky, tough-talking type either. He recalls with fondness his rural postman-father and his “hazaar khat, hazaar kahaniyan”. He breaks into a gentle jig as he sings a number inspired by a Sukumar Ray nonsense rhyme (Hattima Timtim…). He creates a dreamy world for himself and repeatedly retreats into it.

Anwar, sporting a black hat and dark glasses, carrying a backpack and a still camera for the purposed of gathering photographic evidence, and exuding a detached demeanour that belies his firm commitment to his job, works for a detective agency that sends him on assignments pertaining primarily to missing persons.

Be it in the field or in the confines of his modest home in a rundown building, the protagonist grapples with crushing loneliness. Siddiqui fleshes Anwar out with intuition and empathy, conjuring up an individual whose pluck is as intriguing as his plight is sympathy-inducing.
