Review:
It’s a war-torn village Kommaddi, where heads fly faster than the words that its residents mouth. Two warring groups lead by Narapareddy and Basireddy too prefer to speak through their swords than words. Even a game of cards in this backdrop is addressed as ‘five rupee worth faction’. In comes the son of the soil, Veeraraghava Reddy, the only sign of hope to instill some sense amidst this menace. Featuring an actor like Jr NTR known for his action potboilers, Trivikram utilises his presence and a commercial backdrop to drive home an important signal of peace, like the pigeon that accompanies the title card in the opening frame.
Though the plot outline makes this seem like a Mirchi equivalent for Jr NTR – the cocktail of intensity, entertainment, efficient dialogue-baazi, all in measured amounts, keeps the film ticking along neatly. Trivikram masters the judicious balance of pandering to the masses and being a sane voice in the time of need. Aravinda Sametha Veeraraghava is definitely a film that marks a firm departure from the comfort zone of the director and the lead actor. It’s a story that single-mindedly focuses on transformation, and one whose intentions remain consistent. The strong performances do a lot of good in ensuring an impactful film, that precisely paves the way for ‘Rayalaseema’ to turn into a ‘Ratanalaseema’.
Melodrama often clouds the character arcs of women in factionism-driven films, that’s where Aravinda Sametha differs from the pack. The Penimiti song is one example of the emotional turmoil that a woman suffers as her man sets out for a blood bath. And Aravinda, played by Pooja Hegde isn’t Trivikram’s quintessential heroine. Here she is studying anthropology and ethno-driven violence, being the critical link in showing the way forward to a character like Veeraraghava Reddy stuck between revenge and larger purpose. Supriya Pathak, Devayani, Eeswari Rao may have minimal screen time, but there’s enough meat in their characterisation.
This transformational journey gives us a delightful interval action block where Jr NTR offers the goons a taste of death and yet doesn’t tear them apart. While there’s enough action and drama happening in the proceedings to keep you occupied in the first hour, things aren’t quite seamless post the intermission. The one worry throughout Aravinda Sametha remains its predictability. But for a twist or two, you know the trajectory of its lead character. It’s the humour quotient that keeps the film alive then. Naresh and Srinivas Reddy continue from where they left their delightful banter in A..Aa. Sunil delivers lesser laughs than promised, but that doesn’t take away anything from his much needed return to his forte.
All it takes to make a solid commercial film is to redefine it in relevance to the times. It’s not often you’d find a lead character asking people, ‘what’s so heroic about holding a dagger or slapping your thigh’. It’s refreshing to watch NTR remain his controlled self in the film’s entirety. Pooja Hegde gets a credible role as a budding documentary filmmaker, though it’s hard to fathom an actor like Eesha being saddled into a role of nothingness. Trivikram’s fascination for mythology lends well with the theme and the treatment scores over his indulgence this time. And Thaman’s evolution as a composer truly benefits the film. A emotional drama camouflaged in a commercial exterior, here’s a film that’s courageous to stand apart from slapstick madness.

Rajaram is the son of Raghuram an investigative journalist in a United Nations agency. He infiltrates the criminal organization of Nana Bhai and earns his trust. He gathers proof against the activities of Nana and hands them over to newspaper publisher Chaitanya Prasad alias CP. There is a popular Hyderabadi confection Dil Khush, which is basically a triangular bread pie stuffed with cake leftovers. Depending on the quality of the bread and the cake leftovers and the baker, the price varies from Rs 5 to Rs25, it’s still called Dil Khush though. If somebody comes along remakes it with fine Italian bread and fancy chocolate cake leftovers, and serves it chilled, and calls it Chocolate Sundae (or some such), and charges Rs 100 for it, would you still buy it? May be you would. But then this movie a like the expensive Dil Khush made with the same old cheap cake leftovers. The filmmakers, we’re afraid, sold us a dummy in the garb of a “stylish revenge drama.” Besides Venky’s hooded long coats, Taapsee Pannu’s micro minis (skirts and wraparounds) there is hardly anything that qualifies to be called stylish, unless of course you want to add wide-angled montages of some picturesque sights of Malaysia, which has become the official head quarters of Tollywood’s underworld dons. The villain, Nana Bhai, is another such international mafia-kingpin who wears designer suits and flies around in a personal helicopter. His close aides start falling prey to an unidentified long haired killer, who drives a fancy bike and calls himself Shadow.

The villain, Nana Bhai, is another such international mafia-kingpin who wears designer suits and flies around in a personal helicopter. His close aides start falling prey to an unidentified long haired killer, who drives a fancy bike and calls himself Shadow.
The most entertaining part of the movie is the comedy track involving MS Narayana who plays Psycho Srinivas, a “post mortem specialist”. Venkatesh, tries hard to breathe life into a character that seems like a throwback to his Satruvu days. At over 50, perhaps he’s gotten a little old to get away with this kind of juvenile stuff now.
Taapsee’s performance is the most eye-popping of them all, quite literally at that. Let’s just say we get to see a lot (more than usual) of her in the movie and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say, the curly haired actress gave the hooters and whistlers plenty to cheer about. There support cast of Srikanth, Nasser, Suman, Kavitha and Madhurima do what is required of them. Aditya Pancholi and gang have little to do in terms of acting. They just seem to come and go.
Taapsee Pannu’s slender curvature dominates the songs, which seem like show-reels of het glam quotient, while tunes hardly register. The narrative lacks consistency and the cinematography and editing seem to have a heavy “Billa” hangover.
Note: It’s basically a big dumb revenge drama made with the usual accompaniments, watch it if you are in the mood for some lame fun.

Review:
Quite often, dons are portrayed in a comical way in our films. In several cases, they are reduced to caricaturish roles (when they are not the antagonist). In some cases, they’re given a human touch and made the lead (Munnabhai MBBS comes to mind). Director Sriram Adittya sidesteps the stereotypes and manages to give his character a unique twist in his latest comic caper Devadas. With some cracking humour and well written dialogues, the film is thoroughly entertaining for most part of it. A tighter screenplay, less melodrama and a better climax — and this film could’ve been one for the ages. But for most part of it, Devadas is jolly good fun.
We are introduced to Deva (Akkineni Nagarjuna), a dreaded gangster who’s is baying for blood after his mentor is brutally killed by a rival gang. Being the most wanted criminal, the cops are determined to catch Deva. While on the run from the cops, an injured Deva stumbles into a clinic run by Dr Das (Nani), a sincere doctor who never tires of telling people he’s a gold medallist. In strange circumstances, the two of them become friends. However, Das soon finds out that being friends with a wanted criminal is not as easy as it seems.
The humour is absolutely spot on in Devadas, with Nani getting some hilarious dialogues. There are several moments when he brings the house down with his wisecracks. The writing is creative, and Nagarjuna is not your run-of-the-mill don. He loves to drink, longs for home food and likes spending time with people who don’t fear him. The scenes involving the two stars are a riot, and film mainly revolves around them (rightly so).
But while Devadas starts off well, it’s hampered by an overdose of melodrama as the film progresses, with the sincere doc trying to convince the don to leave the life of crime. There’s a car-chase sequence involving Naveen Chandra, who plays Nag’s rival in the film — a scene which is excruciatingly long and boring. The climax too is weak, and lacks the punch the film needed. The director fails to strike a balance between the light-hearted moments and the melodramatic ones, hampering what is otherwise a hilarious film. Mani Sharma’s music is decent but doesn’t stay with you.
But if there’s one thing that makes watching Devadas worthwhile, it’s Nani. The actor is in top form and delivers one of his funniest performances in recent times. Every time he introduces himself as Dr Das, MBBS, MS, Gold Medallist, you can’t help but laugh — and there’s a lot more from him in this film. Nagarjuna breezes through his role with effortless ease and his scenes with Nani are particularly wonderful to watch. Both Rashmika and Aakanksha deserved better character arcs, even though they play people of prominence. They’re largely sidelined thanks to the Deva and Das show. Vennela Kishore, Rao Ramesh and Murali Sharma have short but effective roles and they’re superb.
Devadas certainly has its moments with some cracking humour and solid performances by its two stars. A tad too long, with some avoidable melodrama and a weak climax prove to be troublesome, but it doesn’t take it away from a hilarious first half which makes it worth your while. If you’re somebody who enjoys Nani’s brand of humour – Devadas is a must-watch.

But a huge mix-up means he shows up at the wrong office, and to do a job he doesn’t have the heartfor.

‘A Simple Murder’ has a drum-roll-worthy commencement but loses its sheen pretty early on owing to haphazard direction and a feeble script. The promo says it’s a comedy of errors but except for a few condom-packet jokes and that one ‘cheque nahin, Czech Republic’ punchline, the rest of this action-comedy is a continuous effort to connect the dots while trying to stay relevant (and funny) along the way. Of course, the actors ease the pain with their earnest attempts at conjuring up something entertaining with what they had at their disposals, but good acting sans a solid plotline and crisp direction random work. Do they? And to add insult to injury, S. Bharathwaaj’s cinematography tanks – flat-out lazy, underwhelming and there’s no nicer way of saying it.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s this Dilli-ka-macho-launda – spewing gaalis and burning with envy over his wife’s growing proximity with her affluent boss (Ayaz Khan). That charcter hates the world for his own shortcomings, and Zeeshan as Manish is hilariously delusional and a natural at that. ‘English Vinglish’ girl Priya Anand is a greedy, over-ambitious woman stuck with wrong men and the actress has no problem in portraying a morally-bankrupt person and staying in sync with the energy of the male lead. Sushant Singh is highly animated as kill-on-cue Himmat and although his sing-song diction is initially endearing, it gets borderline annoying after the first few episodes. Not his fault though.

Nothing’s simple about ‘A Simple Murder’ and if that was the intent, it has landed miles away from where it was supposed to.

Review:
Tom Cruise’s second film in the series based on the popular books by Lee Child is more engaging than the previous one. It lends an emotional touch to what you expect from a standard action-crime caper. The film is replete with hard-hitting fistfights, lots of running around, quick chase sequences, ample gunshots, cheeky one-liners, and a plot laced with suspense and a father-daughter side story. In totality, it ticks all the genre-specific traits that you anticipate from it. Cruise even lets his charming self, take a backseat as he puts on the brooding persona of his character with elan.Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), a former military policeman must decode an arms deal conspiracy that sabotages the mission of his potential love interest — army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders). Meanwhile, he must also ensure the safety of Sam (Danika Yarosh), a foster care teenager who may or may not be his daughter.

However, in spite of delivering what’s expected of him, Tom Cruise just doesn’t fit in as the stoic Jack Reacher, period. You hope for a miracle throughout and expect the charming Ethan Hunt in him to take over. Cruise is not himself without that signature dimpled smirk and starry personality. Also, age seems to be finally catching up with him. His face looks heavier and gestures a tad restrained, which wasn’t the case even in his last release — ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’. The American superstar vaguely resembles Owen Wilson now. While it certainly isn’t a bad thing, he no longer looks like Tom Cruise and that’s a truly heart-breaking moment for his diehard fans.
Cobie Smulders is impressive as a competent officer, who hates to take orders, solely because she is a woman. She executes the stunt scenes well. However, there is no great chemistry between Cruise and her, given their supposed attraction to each other.
To cut to the chase, this crime thriller mostly works for its engaging plot and edge-of-the-seat action instead of its star power. However, if you are a massive Tom Cruise fan, do watch the film for that one scene towards the end, where he gives you glimpses of his ‘Top Gun’ days. That’s pure joy.

Review:
Suriya’s acting skills no introduction! His roles in films like Ghajini, Khaka Khaka, Surya s/o Krishnan are proof enough of his charm and elegance. After a breezy entertainer like “Veedokkade”, he’s back in “Ghatikudu” along with Nayanatara. Directed by K.S.Ravikumar, ‘Ghatikudu’ narrates the story of a contract killer who’s hired to kill a VIP.

What is it about : Suriya stars as Ashok, a sharp shooter in Kolkata who never leaves any evidence in all the murders he commits. One day, he accepts a contract from Abdul (Mukul Dev) to kill a judge played by Bharath Murali, but misses his target on the destined day. Ashok, who never misses his target, promises Abdul that he will kill the judge within 10 days. He traps, Vadivelu, a servant in the judge’s house and succeeds in entering the house as Vadivelu’s relative. He meets Tara (Nayanathara) in the same house and they are slowly drawn to each other. In the meantime, Ashok impresses everyone in the house at the same time plotting to kill the judge. However, his plans go awry most of the time but he never gives up. Does he really succeed in killing the judge? How does his growing relationship, with the family affect his plans? That forms the rest of the story.

What is Good: Suriya puts his heart and soul throughout the film. Be it in his role as a contract killer or as the servant in the judge’s house, his body language is brilliant. The much publicized sequence of him acting as a 10 year old boy has a great shock value, however it doesn’t look natural. The film also owes a lot to the comedian, Vadivelu whose comic timing is almost perfect. The entire first half of the film solely concentrates on the funny situations between the two and the duo doesn’t disappoint at all. Although, she doesn’t have a critical role, Nayanathara is good enough. Bharath Murali delivers a credible performance as the judge. The entire sequence between Suriya and the judge’s family members is a pleasure to watch in the first half.

What is bad: After starting on an interesting note in the first half, the film slowly loses its steam and pace in the second half. The director shows Suriya as a 10 year old boy, but the sheer predictability of the story ruins the script. Villian’s role is not strong enough. The climax of the film is absolutely ridiculous, the kind which you would only expect in “Superman” movies! The entire second half is about tying the loose ends of the film and the director narrates everything in a hurry.

Technical Departments: Story by Ramesh Khanna has all the ingredients for a commercial potboiler. Art by Rajeevan is good and the Costumes department deserves a special mention especially for the songs. Editing by Donmax is slick and crisp. Cinematography by Ganesh is wonderful especially in the beginning of the film and in the songs shot in Iceland and South Africa. Harris Jayraj has composed six soundtracks for the film and each of them has a style of its own. Director, K.S.Ravikumar who in the past has made films like Dashavatharam, starts on a good note in “Ghatikudu”. But the sloppy second half and a ridiculous climax takes the fun out of the film.

Bottomline: The film has almost all the ingredients for a commercial potboiler. Despite all that, K.S.Ravikumar sticks to his usual formula and delivers a predictable film. Most of the film has been shot in Kolkata, it would have been much better if more locations across Kolkata were used for the movie. Suriya’s action, Vadivelu’s comedy and Nayanathara’s glamour are the plus points for the film. However, a sluggish pace in second half and a bad climax takes the fun out of the film. Watch it only for Suriya, he dazzles in almost everything, acting, dancing and fights! It’s a rather silly, pointless film with ample thrills and comedy to keep you hooked onto the screen.

Review:
Big Indian interest? Frieda Pinto. As the virgin oracle who gets maximum screen time amongst the female cast, this should have been reason enough for Indians to claim the film as their own. More importantly, the fact that she chooses to give up her celestial status for more earthly pleasures and falls in love with the brawny peasant leader,
Theseus, should have added adequate spice to the proceedings. But the problem with Immortals is its garbled screenplay, its lacklustre, almost lifeless action cuts, making the film end up as a pale shadow of the mesmerising 300. Heavily imbued with mythology, the film fails to connect. And the fact that Frieda pitches in a frozen act makes you feel miserable. The only actor who breathes life on screen is the wicked, crooked Mickey Rourke.
Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares (Daniel Sharman). Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the King’s hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man’s conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion, until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus (Luke Evans), Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders, including visionary Priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff), one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend.

In Greece, the cruel and evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) is searching with his ruthless army for the Epirus Bow, a powerful weapon made by the Gods, to unleash the imprisoned Titans and destroy the Gods. When King Hyperion comes to the village of the peasant Theseus, he kills his mother and brings Theseus (Henry Cavill) as a slave to work in his mines. However, Phaedra (Freida Pinto) helps to release him with the support of the prisoner Stavros (Stephen Dorff). Meanwhile, Zeus (Luke Evans) advises the other Gods that they should not interfere with the human free will and the last hope of mankind.

Synopsis
When the world was young, the gods did battle in the sky. The victors ruled on Mt. Olympus and imprisoned the vanquished — the Titans — beneath Mt. Tartarus on Earth. Also lost during the battle is the Bow of Epirus, a mighty weapon that can shoot invincible energy arrows.

Centuries later, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) mounts a campaign to recover the Bow of Epirus and free the Titans. Bitter over the deaths of his wife and children due to disease, he is resolved to destroy the gods who refused his prayers to spare his family. He overtakes the Sybelline Monastery, imprisoning the virgin oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and her attendants, then lays waste to villages in the area. In one village works the stone mason Theseus (Henry Cavil). Theseus has been trained in the military arts by a mysterious Old Man (John Hurt) who encourages him to be a protector of all humanity; Theseus, whose devout mother was raped and thus considered an outcast, refuses. When the goddess Athena (Isabel Lucas) visits the Old Man, he is revealed to be Zeus (Luke Evans) in human disguise.

When Hyperion’s forces destroy Theseus’s village, he kills Theseus’s mother in front of him and imprisons Theseus, where Phaedra and her attendants are also kept. Phaedra inadvertently touches Theseus and has a vision of him as either the savior of humanity or the ally of Hyperion in the destruction of the world. That night, she and her attendants seduce and kill the guards; Phaedra escapes with Theseus and two other slaves, Stavros (Steven Dorff) and Daerios (Alan Van Spring).

Although Zeus has forbidden the gods to intervene unless the Titans are freed, Athena, Poseidon (Kellan Lutz) and Ares (Daniel Sharman) determine to protect Theseus as best they can. Phaedra tells Theseus he must return to his village and properly bury his mother. There, Theseus discovers the Bow of Epirus. Hyperion has sent the Minotaur (Robert Maillet) and soldiers to intercept them. The soldiers kill Daerios but, after a brutal battle with the Minotaur, Theseus uses the Bow to free the others. That night, Phaedra makes love to Theseus to free herself from her premonitory powers.

The humans make their way to the Sybelline Monastery, where Hyperion has laid another trap. A jackal steals the Bow of Epirus and takes it to Hyperion, but the timely arrival of Athena and Ares saves Thesus, Phaedra and Stavros. This enrages Zeus who kills Ares in punishment but allows Athena to provide horses to Theseus so he can join a last stand against Hyperion’s forces.

As Theseus leads the fight against Hyperions’ army, Hyperion uses the Bow to free the Titans from their prison. This prompts Zeus to intervene, and he, Athena, Poseidon, Heracles and Apollo fight a ferocious battle against the Titans. Theseus confronts Hyperion and, though mortally wounded, finally kills him. The Titans kill all of the gods except Zeus who destroys Mt. Tartarus to contain them again. Zeus takes Athena and Theseus to Olympus with him.

Several years later, Phaedra lives in Theseus’s village with her son, the result of her coupling with Theseus. The Old Man approaches the boy and tells him to prepare for a coming war in heaven. The boy closes his eyes and has a vision of Theseus leading the gods in battle against the resurgent Titans.

— The following is not a plot synopsis, as Tarsem Singh, regardless of his “vision,” is not part of the plot of the film.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) transports us in this epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in Immortals, a stylish and visually spectacular 3D action adventure. As a power-hungry king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful.

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army rampage across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge his mother, who was killed in one of Hyperion’s brutal raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final, desperate battle for the future of humanity. Immortals is produced by Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter).

Review:
Actor Ram is back with “Kandireega” after almost a year’s break. Though the subject of this entertainer is nothing new, debutant director Santosh Srinivas handles it interestingly and comes up with a winner.
Seenu (Ram) who lives in Anakapally with his parents is always falling in trouble. He wants to marry his uncle’s daughter (Swathi), but she rejects him because he is not a graduate. He then decides to head to the city to study. Seenu meets Shruti (Hansika) in college and falls in love with her. But a local goon Bhavani (Sonu Sood) is eyeing Shruti too. The two men compete in a challenge and Seenu who emerges victorious, wins her love. At the same time, enters another villain – Rajanna (Jayaprakash Reddy) from Warangal, who kidnaps Shruti. The reason? Rajanna’s daughter Sandhya (Aksha) fell in love with Seenu at first sight and asks her father to get her married to him. Seenu heads to Warangal to rescue Shruti.
Though the story isn’t too original, Santosh Srinivas brings the film to life with some fresh dialogues and good screenplay. The ‘punch’ dialogues will appeal to the masses.
Ram carries the whole film on his shoulders and is a bundle of talent and energy. His lively act and fun dialogue delivery livens up the screen. He dances well too. Hansika, who has grown rather chubby lately, is passable in her role. Aksha does her part well. Sonu Sood’s performance is his best Telugu one till date. Though he played villain in many films, the comic element in his character in “Kandireega” is noteworthy. Camera work by Andrew makes the film look good.
“Kandireega” is an out-and-out entertainer that doesn’t leave you bored for even a second. Ram makes it a total paisa vasool flick.

Review:
Anurag Basu’s ‘Ludo’ which blends in characters, stories and genres starts off with a grisly murder by Sattu Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi). Then, as parallel stories and characters emerge, so do some varying situations.Akash (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Ahana (Sanya Malhotra) find themselves in a pickle when they discover that a video clip of them having sex has gone viral on the internet. With Ahana’s wedding scheduled in a few days to another man, they try to get to the bottom of this.
On the other hand, an ex-convict, Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan) is released from jail after six years only to realise that his wife and little daughter have moved on.
At the same time, when a doting wife, Pinky(Sana Fatima Shaikh) finds out that her husband has been accused of a murder, she runs to her childhood sweetheart, Alok aka Alu (Rajkummar Rao) to help bail him out.
And elsewhere, a down on luck salesman, Rahul (Rohit Saraf) and a nurse who is repeatedly bullied at work, Sheeja (Pearle Maney) go about their respective days, not knowing that soon their lives will take a dramatic turn.
At the onset, ‘Ludo’ seems to strike with an interesting premise. The catchy opening track, a compelling start and a quirky build up manages to set an intriguing tone. Then, as the multiple characters get introduced with the spotlight on each backstory one by one, slowly fitting into pieces of a puzzle – the pace unfortunately begins to ebb. And that would be one of the biggest drawbacks of the film because as it tries to fit in all the stories and characters, the narrative begins to get overstuffed. So before one can wholly invest in a character, the thread is left to move on to another. And that too at a languid pace, with a narrator (Anurag Basu) making an appearance to stitch it all together and ponder on morality and the tussle between what constitutes sins and virtues. The cinematic treatment, however, has some trademark Basu signatures – the hues of blues and reds, the play of light and shadow setting the visual tone (cinematography – Anurag Basu). There is a dollop of dark comedy, a helping of sweet romance and some varied characters inadvertently thrown in the middle of it all. The background score and soundtrack (Pritam), undoubtedly perk up the proceedings.
The ensemble cast deliver some credible performances – Pankaj Tripathi is reliably good and it’s obvious he enjoyed playing the badass criminal to the hilt. Rajkummar Rao’s Mithun fan avatar is a hoot and he brings an endearing touch to it without getting hammy. Abhishek Bachchan makes an impact as Bittu. Fatima Sana Shaikh as the part docile, part trigger happy Pinky, is a revelation. Sanya Malhotra and Aditya Roy Kapoor hold their own well with some cutesy moments in their romance. Rohit Saraf with minimal dialogues but an interesting track stands out. And Pearle Maney leaves quite an impression.
‘Ludo’ has some moments that sparkle, some that are edgy, quirky and stay with you, but it also has some indulgent ones and some that seem pointless and unconvincing. The screenplay (Anurag Basu) gets scattered and meanders mid-way but if one can ride over those bumps (with a runtime of two and a half hours that may seem like a tad much), the climax ties everything up rather neatly, with some quintessential badass quotient and surprises thrown in. Watch this one for the noteworthy performances and its interesting mix of morally ambiguous characters. Ultimately ‘Ludo’ tries to make a larger point about not judging anyone for the choices they make.

Based on Captain GR Gopinath’s Simply Fly and ‘stories from the aviation industry’, Sudha Kongara’s Soorarai Pottru is an inspiring tale about a common man who dreamt big. The film revolves around Nedumaaran Rajangam (Suriya), the son of a school teacher (Poo Ramu) in a Madurai village, who decides to start a lowcost airline that can be aspirational for even the less privileged. But with his inspiration, Paresh Goswami (Paresh Rawal), a leader in the aviation industry, trying his best to ensure that this dream doesn’t take off, will Maara be able to reach for the sky and not fall down?
Soorarai Pottru is a Suriya show all the way. After 24, he gets his meatiest role in a while, and the actor digs in with his customary tenacity, making us feel Maara’s every delight and despair. Be it the dramatic scene where he begs for money from passengers in an airport to visit his ailing dad or the subtle hints of hesitation that he conveys over asking for a loan from his own wife, Sundari aka Bommi (Aparna Balamurali), the actor shows that why he is considered one of the best of his generation.
The Maara-Bommi relationship is one of the film’s major strengths. They are both individuals who are crazy about their high-flying dreams. Bommi’s dream of running a bakery might seem small compared to Maara’s at first glance, but Sudha Kongara keeps underling the fact that she is also breaking the glass ceiling in her own way. Right from her introduction scene, when an older man tells her that it is only only sons provide for their parents, Bommi keeps questioning the patriarchy around her. When a relative asks her the reason for her saying ‘No’ to Maara, she asks if he had ever posed the same question to the 20 men who had rejected her as a bride! And when her family is concerned that Maara might not be able to look after her, she asks if it is always the man who is supposed to care for his wife.
In fact, it is her success — and her support — that allows Maara to cling on to his wild dream at his lowest moments. Refreshingly, the director doesn’t give her rousing lines to show this, but hard-hitting repartee. In one crucial scene, when a dejected Maara asks Bommi, who is feeding him, if she has poisoned the food, she shoots back that she would have, if he had accepted a buyout offer. And when he hesitantly asks her for a loan, she offers to give him more than the amount that he had asked her for and adds that he doesn’t have as big a heart as his dream and not give in to false pride.
Are these touches present because the screenplay has been written by women (Shalini Ushadevi and Sudha Kongara) and we have a woman at the helm here? Maybe yes, maybe not, but this sensitivity in the portrayal of a female character is definitely admirable. And Aparna Balamurali gives a spunky performance that instantly makes this character endearing.
The writing is pretty solid all round. From the efficient analogy of a Udipi hotel vs five-star that she uses to make the audience understand her protagonist’s dreams to the heartwarming scene of an entire village chipping in with their money to make this dream come true, the director gives us memorable moments and memorable characters. Of course, a couple of characters, like Mohan Babu’s Naidu, Maara’s strict higher officer in the army, and Maara’s friends (Vivekh Prasanna and Krishna Kumar) are strictly functional, but there are standouts as well. Like Poo Ramu’s Rajangam, and a terrific Urvashi, who, for a change, gets a serious role in Tamil, and Karunas, as Bommi’s uncle Alapparai.
Beneath the inspiring rags-to-riches tale, Soorarai Pottru is also a solid commentary on caste. When the less privileged Maara questions his pacifist father about what good his manu (petitions) has done, it also becomes a discussion on Manu (Smriti). Maara’s victory in the end not only ends in Paresh Goswami ending up having to swallow a bitter pill literally, but figuratively as well. Paresh’s reason for his desire to crush Maara’s dreams in the bud — despite he, too, being a man who has risen from a humble background — is reflective of the attitude that many of the less privileged develop once they become entitled.
On the downside, the film’s portrayal of the antagonist borders on caricature. As in Irudhi Suttru, this character is quite one-dimensional, and tonally different from the flesh-and-blood character of Maara and the people around him. It’s as if Jackie Shroff’s character in Bigil has somehow managed to enter into this world taking the form of Paresh Rawal.
Right from the start, the film shows us how the nexus between capitalists and bureaucrats has been instrumental in crushing anyone who dares to dream big, after a point, the hurdles that Maara has to cross begin to feel repetitive, making the film seem a bit overlong. But the closing visuals of the joy on the faces of the common folk who take the flight on Maara’s aircraft ensure a smooth touchdown.

Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra is Suriya’s show all the way, with the actor getting his meatiest role in a while after 24. The actor digs in with his customary tenacity, making us feel Maha’s every emotion, be it in the dramatic scene where he begs for money or the subtle hints of hesitation he feels when asking a loan from his wife (Aparna Balamurali).
Maha’s relationship with his wife is one of the film’s major strengths, with both being individuals who have high-flying dreams. While Aparna’s character’s dream of running a bakery might seem small compared to Maha’s Sudha Kongara does her best to underline the fact that she is breaking the glass ceiling in her own way too. Right from her introduction scene when an older man tells her it’s sons who provide for the family and not daughters, her character questions the patriarchy around her.
Later on in the film, it is her success and support that allows Maha to dream even in his lowest moments. Refreshingly, it is not rousing lines but hard-hitting repartee that dots these scenes. The film has several other moments that make us wonder if these touches are present because the screenplay has been written by women (Shalini Ushadevi and Sudha Kongara). The sensitivity with which the female character is portrayed is definitely admirable and Aparna delivers a spunky performance.

Right from the start, the film shows us how the nexus between capitalists and bureaucrats has been instrumental in crushing anyone who dares to dream big, after a point, the hurdles that Maha has to cross begin to feel repetitive, making the film seem a bit overlong. But the closing visuals of the joy on the faces of the common folk who take the flight on Maha’s aircraft ensure a smooth touchdown.
