Storyline:
Yudi a young politician, is murdered in broad daylight, which opens a can of worms. His closest friends become prime suspects, and as the mystery unfolds, many dark secrets unravel. Dark 7 White is a youth-oriented murder mystery with a quirky telling of black humour. Yudhveer Singh Rathore, to be crowned the youngest CM of the state, gets killed on his way to the swearing in ceremony in a freak accident. But as they say in politics there are no accidents, they have assassinations! DCP Abhimanyu Singh is the investigation officer on this high-profile case and soon he uncovers that the closest friends of Yudhveer are hiding a dark secret, past skeletons start surfacing up, tarnishing their current social status. And to add to the twist, the murder suspects are the closest to Yudi, his entourage- Neelu, Greshma, Shashank, Dhaval, Kush and Yogesh. Abhimanyu, who leads the investigation, also has a past with them all. The story unravels about what happened in these eight years, leading to Yudhveer’s brutal assassination. Yudhveer is a prince from Jaipur, a royal blood. He realises early in life that true power is not money, not royalty, but politics! Politics is indeed the ultimate authority/ power in today’s time. And a peculiar incident in college changes Yudi forever. Yudi decides to be a part of the college elections. It is his first stepping stone, and we see Yudi’s true nature, who he really is. Yudi had a knack of not simply convincing people, but ensuring that they are eating off his palms in minutes. It was as if Yudi’s basic natural instinct to determine a person’s greed, desire and secrets, and how he used exactly those things, to get everything he wanted. He was artistic with his manipulation, and driven with blind ambition to never stop. Abhimanyu finally gets to each one from Yudi’s entourage and finally figures what really must have happened — all in the name of politics, power and money. Hence, begins the journey to and fro of bittersweet relationship between friends. Until it’s found that the accident was indeed a murder. Who killed the master manipulator? How could he be blindsided by his own? Which of his friends betrayed him? Dark 7 White is the answer to all these questions and to the most pertinent question of our existence.

I think I have made it abundantly clear that the first three episodes of Dark 7 White left me bitter, angry, and frustrated. Not because the content is so darkly relevant that it has made me reflect upon the cyclical nature of politics. It’s because it’s just bad. If it wasn’t for Sumeet Vyas and Jatin Sarna’s dedicated performances, I think I would’ve shut it down after the first 10 minutes. Unless it does something magical in the next seven episodes, it’s going to be one of the worst web series in my books. It’s irrelevant. It’s crass. It’s idiotic. It’s poorly shot. It’s horribly edited. It’s horrendously directed. The sound editing is off all the goddamn time. And given the time it is releasing, it’s hugely detrimental to the discourse that’s going around OTT platforms and artistic expression. It’s just going to convince law-making boomers and edgelords who lick their boots that this is one of the reasons why they should monitor everything. So, I’d recommend avoiding Dark 7 White and watching something good that doesn’t advertently or inadvertently promote sexism and homophobia. If you want to hate-watch it, I guess you can go ahead. Or else don’t come close to it.

Within moments Yudhveer (or Yudee or Chief or Shehzade as he is called) is killed and the whole series throttles between a flashback establishing his rise from college politics to Rajasthan politics, and an investigation by ACP Abhimanyu Singh (Jatin Sarna) into who killed him.

The earworm beats of the Rajasthani folk song ‘Laal Peeli Ankhiyaan’ recomposed by Arpit Mehta & Udit Prajapati for this series keeps propelling violence and violation as swag.

The only thing you’ll find is a cheap rip off of a melodrama series from 80s. The story is horrible and make literally no sense. It better to do something else rather than wasting your time through the 5 episode of a poorly laid out melodrama rip off

Review:
It’s a war-torn village Kommaddi, where heads fly faster than the words that its residents mouth. Two warring groups lead by Narapareddy and Basireddy too prefer to speak through their swords than words. Even a game of cards in this backdrop is addressed as ‘five rupee worth faction’. In comes the son of the soil, Veeraraghava Reddy, the only sign of hope to instill some sense amidst this menace. Featuring an actor like Jr NTR known for his action potboilers, Trivikram utilises his presence and a commercial backdrop to drive home an important signal of peace, like the pigeon that accompanies the title card in the opening frame.
Though the plot outline makes this seem like a Mirchi equivalent for Jr NTR – the cocktail of intensity, entertainment, efficient dialogue-baazi, all in measured amounts, keeps the film ticking along neatly. Trivikram masters the judicious balance of pandering to the masses and being a sane voice in the time of need. Aravinda Sametha Veeraraghava is definitely a film that marks a firm departure from the comfort zone of the director and the lead actor. It’s a story that single-mindedly focuses on transformation, and one whose intentions remain consistent. The strong performances do a lot of good in ensuring an impactful film, that precisely paves the way for ‘Rayalaseema’ to turn into a ‘Ratanalaseema’.
Melodrama often clouds the character arcs of women in factionism-driven films, that’s where Aravinda Sametha differs from the pack. The Penimiti song is one example of the emotional turmoil that a woman suffers as her man sets out for a blood bath. And Aravinda, played by Pooja Hegde isn’t Trivikram’s quintessential heroine. Here she is studying anthropology and ethno-driven violence, being the critical link in showing the way forward to a character like Veeraraghava Reddy stuck between revenge and larger purpose. Supriya Pathak, Devayani, Eeswari Rao may have minimal screen time, but there’s enough meat in their characterisation.
This transformational journey gives us a delightful interval action block where Jr NTR offers the goons a taste of death and yet doesn’t tear them apart. While there’s enough action and drama happening in the proceedings to keep you occupied in the first hour, things aren’t quite seamless post the intermission. The one worry throughout Aravinda Sametha remains its predictability. But for a twist or two, you know the trajectory of its lead character. It’s the humour quotient that keeps the film alive then. Naresh and Srinivas Reddy continue from where they left their delightful banter in A..Aa. Sunil delivers lesser laughs than promised, but that doesn’t take away anything from his much needed return to his forte.
All it takes to make a solid commercial film is to redefine it in relevance to the times. It’s not often you’d find a lead character asking people, ‘what’s so heroic about holding a dagger or slapping your thigh’. It’s refreshing to watch NTR remain his controlled self in the film’s entirety. Pooja Hegde gets a credible role as a budding documentary filmmaker, though it’s hard to fathom an actor like Eesha being saddled into a role of nothingness. Trivikram’s fascination for mythology lends well with the theme and the treatment scores over his indulgence this time. And Thaman’s evolution as a composer truly benefits the film. A emotional drama camouflaged in a commercial exterior, here’s a film that’s courageous to stand apart from slapstick madness.

But a huge mix-up means he shows up at the wrong office, and to do a job he doesn’t have the heartfor.

‘A Simple Murder’ has a drum-roll-worthy commencement but loses its sheen pretty early on owing to haphazard direction and a feeble script. The promo says it’s a comedy of errors but except for a few condom-packet jokes and that one ‘cheque nahin, Czech Republic’ punchline, the rest of this action-comedy is a continuous effort to connect the dots while trying to stay relevant (and funny) along the way. Of course, the actors ease the pain with their earnest attempts at conjuring up something entertaining with what they had at their disposals, but good acting sans a solid plotline and crisp direction random work. Do they? And to add insult to injury, S. Bharathwaaj’s cinematography tanks – flat-out lazy, underwhelming and there’s no nicer way of saying it.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s this Dilli-ka-macho-launda – spewing gaalis and burning with envy over his wife’s growing proximity with her affluent boss (Ayaz Khan). That charcter hates the world for his own shortcomings, and Zeeshan as Manish is hilariously delusional and a natural at that. ‘English Vinglish’ girl Priya Anand is a greedy, over-ambitious woman stuck with wrong men and the actress has no problem in portraying a morally-bankrupt person and staying in sync with the energy of the male lead. Sushant Singh is highly animated as kill-on-cue Himmat and although his sing-song diction is initially endearing, it gets borderline annoying after the first few episodes. Not his fault though.

Nothing’s simple about ‘A Simple Murder’ and if that was the intent, it has landed miles away from where it was supposed to.

User Review:
To be honest I have watched only 2 episodes yet and I have to say it lived upto mine expectations. Special credit needs to be given to Diveyndu for his performance as an UP guy. He doesn’t need extra effort to play a role of an UP guy.

I will honestly rate it 6 but its overrated(perhaps paid). Divyendu Sharma acted well. Poor execution of story line. The theme music is played every now and then; it is so irritating. Direction is poor.

This show is a refreshing change of pace from the average TV drama and is completely addictive. There are so many possibilities the show could go anyway and continue to go anyway it chooses.

The scripting is intelligent and well delivered by competent acting…..The show was five episodes in, so I caught up on the action online. And I must say that the acclaim is well-deserved

I like it, and thanks all the cast for their fantastic performances. I’d love to praise this show more but need to get back to binging it some more!

Character driven drama with enough humour and violence to whet my whistle every week. FINALLY A show that relies of good story telling, fantastic acting, chalk full of character, and realistic plot.

This series gets a 10 from me because it’s the only series that I absolutely will not miss an episode of. These guys know what they are doing, and they got it in spades. I try not to binge watch it, but i keep going, “ok just one more” next thing i know its 4am.

Expected quite spot from it but tbh it wasn’t that much fun from starting. Only munna bhaiya and Tiwary ji played their roles nicely. Plot wasn’t that much great and funny. Though enjoyed it. Ending was okay too.

Main character has followed theme and style from Mirzapur series. No doubt that acting is very good but this is simple story of some twists and turns. Nothing new, but yes not upto rating of 10.

Not as per expectations, just a hyped one, do not waste your time, very much better series are out there.

Really, Acting is brilliant but writing direction screenplay is not a level to match acting level. If you love our new hard working actors go for it but if you want a good story then this should be avoid.

Review:
When director Buddhadeb Dasgupta is at his best in Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa, his fourth Hindi narrative feature, he captures life’s broken rhythms beautifully and touchingly even as he celebrates the resilience of a little man.

Streaming on Eros Now, the film, which alternates between the brooding and the lively, and the wistful and the sardonic, is shot through with Dasgupta’s distinctive, often deadpan poetic flourishes and enlivened by a scintillatingly pitch-perfect Nawazuddin Siddiqui performance.

The melancholic tone of Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is leavened with nostalgia for the receding light; the pessimistic air is tempered with lingering hope of regeneration; the hard, meditative edge is softened by sustained humanism. The treat is redoubled by the lead actor, perfectly cast as a private investigator who is more lost than the prodigals he is tasked to find.

Dasgupta suspends the titular figure, the man’s tale, and its spatial parameters somewhere between acute realism and genteel, tactile fancy. The eponymous protagonist is a faltering, unassuming detective unlike any we have encountered in Hindi cinema before. His job is to find answers. He poses questions instead.

Mohammad Anwar isn’t the cocky, tough-talking type either. He recalls with fondness his rural postman-father and his “hazaar khat, hazaar kahaniyan”. He breaks into a gentle jig as he sings a number inspired by a Sukumar Ray nonsense rhyme (Hattima Timtim…). He creates a dreamy world for himself and repeatedly retreats into it.

Anwar, sporting a black hat and dark glasses, carrying a backpack and a still camera for the purposed of gathering photographic evidence, and exuding a detached demeanour that belies his firm commitment to his job, works for a detective agency that sends him on assignments pertaining primarily to missing persons.

Be it in the field or in the confines of his modest home in a rundown building, the protagonist grapples with crushing loneliness. Siddiqui fleshes Anwar out with intuition and empathy, conjuring up an individual whose pluck is as intriguing as his plight is sympathy-inducing.

Review:
With Prati Roju Pandaage, Maruthi tries hard to deliver a tale that shows how parents feel when they’re nearing the end of days and their children have no time for them. He also tries to show the intricacies of the bond a father shares with his children. But it’s clear from the get-go that this is Raghu Ramayya’s (Satyaraj) story above all. And unfortunately for Sai Dharam Tej, he gets massively overshadowed by the likes of Rao Ramesh and Murali Sharma.
When Raghu Ramayya is nearing the end of days, his three sons and one daughter manage to set aside two weeks for him. His grandson Sai (Sai Dharam Tej) however decides to help him celebrate life before his impending death and maybe even bring the whole family together, so his grandfather dies a happy man surrounded by loved ones. He’s so hell-bent on it that he even helps him meet his old flame, reconcile with his best friend and even gets ready to marry the girl of his choice.
Thrown into the mix are Rao Ramesh, as the eldest son who has a business deal he needs to close, Murli Sharma as the client he’s trying to woo, Ajay and Satyam Rajesh as Sync Brothers, whose only function in the tale is to appear on-screen and get beaten up by a buff Sai Dharam Tej in two random scenes, a trusty sidekick played by Suhas and most importantly, Aarna (Raashi Khanna), the TikTok queen who believes Sai is a fan who came to meet her in Rajahmundry all the way from the US.
Maruthi even manages to get the tone of the film right at first. Despite the cliché route the story takes, with absolutely no surprises, tears and false death proclamations galore, the director manages to make the first half work. It is replete with dark humour and the jokes somehow seem to land most of the time. Rao Ramesh delivers his lines with such ease, it’s hard not to laugh along. The film however suffers from the ‘second half syndrome’ where things go downhill and get so jarringly repetitive, it’s hard not to notice. There’s a long, overdrawn joke about each child of Ramayya describing to him how his funeral plans are being made, complete with live samples and tacky to begin with, it gets too much after a while. The fact that most of the actors in this film (including Sai Dharam Tej) have nothing much to do also begins to get clear.
Satyaraj, Rao Ramesh, Murli Sharma, Hari Teja and Raashi Khanna, even in the limited role, hit the ball out of the park. While Satyaraj does tend to get a little melodramatic at times, it’s hard not to feel for him and his character. Sai Dharam Tej, despite being set up as the hero in the first half, gets overshadowed as the film progresses. But he does manage to hold his own when the time comes. While cinematic liberties are constantly employed, when a person diagnosed with lung cancer begins cycling and playing cricket, you know it’s too much to handle. By the time the climax and Sai Dharam Tej’s soliloquy rolls around, you’re just waiting for what you know is to follow next, the happy ending. The cinematography by Jayakumar is apt and Thaman S’ BGM works well for the film.
Don’t get us wrong because Prati Roju Pandaage has ample moments that’ll make you smile and relate to the characters, if not anything else. Go watch this one if family dramas that are relatable and leave you feeling good are your cup of tea.

Review:
When Gurunam Singh Dhillon (Manoj Phawa) had taken the leap of faith and shifted base to Bombay from Punjab – with the hopes of making it big in the city – he not only married the love of his life (Seema Bhargava), but also inherited 22 buffaloes. Cut to 1995, Papa Dhillon now has everything he had ever hoped for and has built Jai Matarani Doondh Bhandar with love, dahi and lots of paneer (brace yourselves: there’s a lot of dairy reference in the movie for all you lactose-intolerant peeps). But one characteristic trait that he could not hand down to his only son, Suraj Singh Dhillon (Diljit Dosanjh), is his innate ability to win over girls. So when the greedy pundit brings home the kundali of an English-speaking, shorts-donning girl from Bhandup, the entire Dhillon clan jumps with excitement. Not so soon; a little someone stinks of ghee and must be warded off for good. Multiple rejections later, Suraj’s bestie Sukhi, who only mimics Amitabh Bachchan from his angry young man phase, suggests he be the baddie that girls usually hanker after. So when a prospect finally gives her nod, he loses that last flickering hope to a set of photos of him chugging beer.
Who has defamed him and the family? And, most importantly, which ‘bharatiya naari’ is going to marry him now? Suraj refuses to dusk away and he must now be avenged. The culprit: self-proclaimed wedding detective with an impressive repertoire of 48 exposés, Madhu Mangal Rane, is oblivious to his dubious plans though. What happens when these two metaphor-tossing ego maniacs clash, and who’s to lose what here? ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari’ takes a dig at the concept of arranged marriages and all the snooping around that happens within the families for that ‘one achha ladka/ladki’, and, guess what, we are laughing!
Dressed in a nauvari saree, nath and exuding a certain charm that can easily be mistaken for a local hottie, Manoj Bajpayee is hilarious as the lame undercover wedding detective, gossip-monging at a local temple in his opening scene. The jokes are hyper-local, and the attitude, all too relatable. A little later, an equally funny and seasoned humourist joins the frame, Annu Kapoor as Kaka – a family friend and a business liability whose only contribution is that he had once helped Rane’s deceased father with 1200 rupees. The two feed off each other’s energies and their comic timing is impeccable, especially when they bicker over bills and biryanis. Fatima Sana Shaikh is Turshi Rane (Turshi, not Tulsi): a ‘gharelu ladki’ by the day and a closeted DJ by the night; she is attractive and a satisfying chameleon – demure when the situation demands, rebellious when the going gets difficult. What takes this movie notches higher is Diljit’s excellent dialogue delivery and his comic timing. Something as cheesy as, “kya kar rahin hai, butter hands?” or “first sight mein, torch light pe, mujhe tumse pyaar hogaya” would have been a tricky one for a lot of actors, but he charms in the flashiest of scenes and makes one chuckle, knowing full well the joke is stale. His camaraderie with Sukhi and the squabble with Bajpayee are what keep the momentum of the film racing at a thundering speed; the first half in particular. But ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari’ is brainless comedy (not being condescending here), and not everything is meant to add up.
Right from the very start, it is glaringly obvious that the writers – Shokhi Banerjee, Rohan Shankar and Rohan Shankar – are heavily invested in getting the nitty-gritties of the respective acts right and each of the characters has been given distinct personalities and pull-backs. What milk is to Suraj, marriage is to Rane. You will find out why we say so. The celebration of cultures and their blending in together is one that deserves a shout-out, especially in that scene when a group of turban-wearing orchestra performers sing a Marathi wedding song.
The first-half is a visual essay of the lives of Dhillons and Ranes, with so many characters and situations popping in and out of the sequences, but the second-half, especially the ending, feels rushed with a predictable climax. That needed polishing.
Kingshuk Chakravarty and Javed-Mohsin have compiled an amazing collection of songs – if ‘Basanti’ will be remembered for Karishma Tanna, then ‘Ladki Dramebaaz Hai’ and ‘Bad Boys’ will be played on loop for the high-octane music. The set design, however, was a bit of a downer. Except for the incorporation of the Frankfurt Bauhaus telephone, long queues outside of a P.C.O booth and a pager to sort of remind us that it’s still the mid-90s, the film has a very in-the-moment feel to it. Also, Jia Bhagia and Mallika Chauhan could have gone more retro with the styling for Diljit and Fatima; it is preposterous that the duo’s hanging out in bomber jackets and corset crop tops from a time when Mumbai used to be Bombay.
All said and done, ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari’ is a witty satire – on the gori-kaali hangover, what qualifies as good or bad behaviour in today’s world and how little soothsayers know about marriages. Hop on and join in in the tug of war!

Review:
Mahinder Singh aka Montu (Rajkummar Rao) is a slacker. From waking up long after the sun is up to loitering around with his much older bum-chum Masterji (Saurabh Shukla), Montu has little purpose in life. He is super complacent at his job of a PT teacher in his own school, which he landed only because his father (Satish Kaushik) recommended him to the principal (Ila Arun). When he is not wandering around with Masterji, he is playing moral police, doling out instant punishment to space-starved valentine couples. During one such self-assigned patrolling, he hauls up an older couple, thinking they are just fooling around. He even names and shames them by getting their picture published in a local newspaper. But as luck would have it, their daughter Neelima aka Neelu (Nushrratt Bharuccha) ends up at the same school as the new computer teacher. While Montu instantly starts crushing on her, Neelu is obviously quite miffed with him. And thus begins nafrat pyaar ki pehli seedi kinda situation and anyone who has watched even two Bollywood films would know how that will go. But the real twist in the tale comes with the entry of a new PT coach IM Singh (Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub). Riding a Royal Enflied, Singh is literally the better version of Montu, who could whisk away the poor chap’s naukri and chokri in a flash. That’s when our man Montu realises that he needs to up his game or risk losing it all, including his credibility. He declares an all-out sporting war with Singh that also puts to test his own ability to teach. So from this point onwards, some conflict and sporting action kicks in.
Ironically, the writers of ‘Chhalaang’ (Luv Ranjan, Aseem Arrora and Zeishan Quadri) never seem to take the leap of faith in making it an adrenaline pumping sporting spectacle. Neither does the movie explore the nuances of a sweet love story. It only flirts with the idea of making it a love triangle.
That said, there are parts of the second half that do spice up the proceedings. Like every sports film, ‘Chhalaang’ too, has a prep montage song (by Daler Mahendi) with the underdogs slugging it out in the run up to the D-day. Then, some of the sequences employing practical situations to impart physical training lessons to the students are novel and effectively portrayed. However, since we know precious little about the young players, it’s hard to root for them. Instead of well fleshed out characters, the focus is on showing gender equality and women empowerment. This comes across as forced. Musically, there is no rousing number even when the story calls for one.The best track ‘Khair ni Karda’ comes just before the credits roll.
Rajkummar Rao is good as always playing the unambitious PT teacher, but his act of a small-town boy next door is far too repetitive. Perhaps also because the stories from rural India are such a dominant part of his filmography. Also, his rigidly still hair looks kinda odd, even when he is getting down and dirty on the sports field. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub in his athletic avatar and sporting a moustache, fits the bill as the competitive sports teacher. Ditto, for the beautiful Nushrratt Bharuccha, who seems to be performing better with each passing film. As a progressive new-age girl, Bharuccha’s character is the consistent voice of reason. But it’s the character actors, who breathe in most realism into the narrative and also add the much needed comic relief. Among them is a superb Saurabh Shukla complimented by Ila Arun, Satish Kaushik, and an extremely endearing Baljinder Kaur. She plays Montu’s mother with utmost sincerity.
On the whole, director Hansal Mehta gets the setting quite right with a lot of detailing. But with more conviction in execution and writing, this one could’ve hit it out of the park.

Review:
Pepper Chicken movie review is here. Streaming on ShemarooMe Box Office from November 6, 2020, starring Dipannita Sharma, Boloram Das, Baharul Islam, Ravi Sarma, & Monuj Borkotoky. Pepper Chicken is directed by Ratan Sil Sarma. The movie is produced by Dipannita Sharma and K. Zaman.

A female Radio Jockey Vaidehi (Dipannita Sharma), tells a story every day to her listeners. It’s the last day of her stint as an RJ, she is about to get married to her long time fiancée Raman (Ravi Sharma). On her way back to her home, she hires a cab service. During the journey, Vaidehi starts reading Pash (Avtar Singh Sandhu). The driver played by Boloram Das finds it interesting and asks for the page number. Vaidehi says 15 and surprisingly Pash recites poetry attracting the attention of the smart RJ. A conversation begins leading to a chai, snack, at a roadside dhaba, break down of the car, a deserted lonely abandoned villa amidst the dense jungle and mysteriously weird turnaround of events and character shifts.

Ratan Sil Sarma narrates a road movie which is a slow burner, it slowly but surely intoxicates the loyal enthusiasts of road movie thrillers. Nothing groundbreaking and minor in the context of the repertoire of Shemaroo and other significant road movies from the globe. But on the pure merits of the people involved in the making of Pepper Chicken it packs a sufficiently bearable punch in the erstwhile high octane road/rage genre. Thanks to the outstanding performances from Boloram Das and Dipannita Sharma which lift this average thriller from plain normal to something better than average.

Losing tremendously on the Pash/Manto build up, Pepper Chicken easily settles into a known psychological hunter/hunted format. It has its moments of tension and thrills for the average viewer.

Anyhow the loss of the great opportunity where literature becomes a common ground between the RJ and the driver is lost so easily. In much able hands, this could have travelled much deeper and made a significant impact.

Plus, the news about shooting in Assam jungles and all fails to get any support due to all the action at night. It would have been much better and more appropriate to have this shot in daylight that explored the beauty of the jungle on one hand and the ‘beauty’ in distress on the other.

Anyhow, Ratan Sil Sarma is successful in manipulating the audience with the mood shifts of the characters in Pepper Chicken.

Boloram Das – what a week he is having, Welcome Home and now this. His controlled sadistic kinks on screen as the driver is nuanced and brilliantly portrayed. Dipannita Sharma as the damsel in distress is fabulous as well.

Review:
He is a self-proclaimed ‘hard-core lover’ and there are very few things in life Asif wouldn’t do for his spouse of three years. It is this very reason that prompts him to pack his bags and rush off to Daman to patch things up between Rashmi and her family, and maybe procure a place in their hearts for him, too.“He runs granite and marbles business and is a senior member at the Jagoo Aavam committee; they are fighting the superstitious beliefs surrounding ghosts and spirits,” declares Rashmi – proudly – when quizzed about her husband’s profession. So when the neighbourhood kids refuse to play at the adjacent ground because an evil spirit dwells there, Asif, quite expectedly, brushes it off and pledges to play a full IPL game on that abandoned land.
Soil nailing, very dramatically, changes the Earth above and beneath – dark, ferocious clouds looming around at an alarming pace, while dried autumn leaves caress the faces. The witch sleeping underneath that piece of turf has been shaken awake, and now, she must follow the culprit home: Asif. Too dramatic? So is the plot of this film, read on. When the spirit does make her way into that home, it’s complete mayhem and madness. Who is it? What does she want? And why is Asif having a little escapade of his own with sarees and bangles? Questions aplenty, answers lie in ‘Laxmii’ – literally and figuratively.
What makes or breaks a comedy are its one-liners, the actors’ timing and the relevance of the jokes and where they land. Unfortunately, Akshay Kumar-Kiara Advani starrer ’Laxmii’ has none. The project is ambitious and has cherry-picked an interesting angle to inculcate into the narrative – of the ghost being a transgender with unfinished business – but the execution is over the top and melodramatic even by comedy standards. The first half is laden with random bickering among characters that are flat-out pointless.
Masala movie-making man Farhad Samji’s adaptive screenplay has many a loophole and there are inconsistencies that would be criminal to look past. Case in point: If Kiara’s parents are celebrating their 25th anniversary and her character has eloped three years back, how is an evidently much older Deepak (Manu Rishi Chadha) her elder brother? Samji tries hard to hit the bull’s eye with this one by conjuring up chaos at peak moments, but with a cattle farmer being referred to as ‘Hi, cow man! Andar aao,’ there wasn’t much hope whatsoever. Was there?
Akshay Kumar’s quite the charmer as a staunch atheist and then a man grappling with demonic possession, but then again, when is he not? And Kiara Advani balances his act out with her sensible demeanour and that pretty smile. Rajesh Sharma as Papa is a henpecked husband trying to convince everyone – and himself really – that he is in charge of his life. But with a tanker of a wife (Ayesha Raza Mishra) and a jagrata-crazed son, Deepak (Manu Rishi Chadha), Sharma portrays the role of an inactive player in denial with comfort. Ayesha Raza Mishra and Ashwini Kalsekar’s Ashwini do all the screaming and hollering; not a single scene squeezes even a mild grin out of the viewers; if that was the intent at all.
Raghava Lawrence’s direction feels like an effort to overcompensate for the lack of clarity and humour in its plot; the discomfort and need to polish up is visible and quite obvious. The music rendered by Tanishk Bagchi, Anup Kumar and Shashi-Khushi, though dropped at random intervals, is hummable. Peppy tunes like ‘Burjkhalifa’ and ‘BamBholle’ resonate for their quirkiness (good quirk, that is!). However, the same cannot be said about Amar Mohile’s background score – tepid and misplaced.
‘Laxmii’ sets out to be a satire against age-old beliefs and biases – we get it! – but the insipidness of the narrative and whatever follows thereon, butchers the lessons it originally desires to impart.
Looking back, the reiterating catchphrase happens to be ‘Maine kuch nahin dekha… yahaan koi nahin hain’ and that’s the vibe we’re latching on to at the moment.

Review:
The theme and intent of ‘Kaali Khuhi’ (translation: The Black Well) is clear as crystal: there’s an abandoned, sealed wellthat is home to evil spirits with a dark history of its own and – for the sake of sanity and survival – it needs to be left alone. But, one fateful night, a naïve villager cracks open the lid and the spirits make their way back into the village, especially a little girl who hitchhikes to Darshan’s place on a bicycle. The old woman, oblivious to the mayhem that’s about to unleash on her and the family, welcomes the drenched girl thinking she has lost her way and must reunite with her parents. Little did she know that this unexpected visitor is no damsel in distress and it is her who needs saving; Dadi (Leela Samson) faints and falls seriously ill once she learns about the true identity of the spirit. Despite the constant bickering and a clearly strained relationship with her mother-in-law, Priya tags along only to realise that her husband doesn’t plan on leaving and the evil entities dwelling at the top floor of their family home wouldn’t let them stay. What’s the back story? And what does the spirit want?

Co-written and directed by Terrie Samundra, ‘Kaali Khuhi’ picks up the alarming issue of female infanticide in the country, which, unfortunately, exists even to this day in some parts of the country. The hamlet in Punjab remains nameless throughout the film and can be considered as a metaphor to emphasise on the fact that this pressing problem is not confined to one geographical territory – female infanticide and female foeticide are widespread and that’s the message Samundra and Co are trying to send out. Impactful! But the real hindrance in the narrative comes in the form of pace and how this well-meaning story is executed. We are left scratching our heads for most part of the movie for two reasons: A) The diegesis moves at a painfully slow pace, and B) In an attempt to lay out a balanced narrative, the makers sort of lose the plot altogether. Without giving out any spoilers, we would like to talk about the three old women in the village, who carried forward, some of these age-old beliefs… Yes, ‘Kaali Khuhi’ wants to portray that a certain breed of women mourn the arrival of a girl child and that that mentality is not restricted to just men. But, with only one Satyadeep Misra on screen, how is that a fair and balanced portrayal of this complex phenomenon? The dialogues are clear-cut and everything is spelt out, leaving very little to the viewers’ imagination. Also, ‘Kaali Khuhi’ is not your typical jumbscare prenatural drama – other than a few mirror reflections and a couple of passing shadows, there is nothing in this socially-relevant movie that scares the dear life out of you.

As the ‘nayi pidhi’ and torchbearer of change, Riva Arora as Shivangi delivers a performance that manages to keep you invested in the story however confusing. Rose Rathod plays the little girl who stays next door with Satya Masi (Shabana Azmi) and renders the much-needed innocence in this otherwise grim story. Sanjeeda Sheikh is the headstrong ‘aaj ki naari’ Priya, who calls out her mother-in-law’s dated beliefs and tackles problems head-on; the actress is impactful in her depiction of the distressed matriarch. Satyadeep Misra’s only job in ‘Kaali Khuhi’ is to be a bigoted man and he does so with ease. Shabana Azmi is inarguably the show-stealer and as Satya Masi, she personifies rebellion against bogus social customs. Daniel B. George’s music heightens the eerie factor of the film in intense scenes.‘Kaali Khuhi’ has its heart at the right place but its execution is insipid and often perplexing.
